Chapter 22

It was later, after dessert and a lot more dancing, when Lucas took her hand and led her to the door of the converted barn. “Come. Let us get some air.” He snagged her coat off the hook by the door, but didn’t bother with his.

Mari glanced down at her strappy silver sandals. “Lucas, it’s snowing. I can’t go out in these.”

“Just for a moment. Look how pretty the snow is. Here, let me carry you.” He lifted her by the hips and she wasn’t sure quite how he did it, but somehow he shifted her so that she was sitting on his forearm, his two hands clasped together for support. “There. How is that?”

She giggled. She couldn’t help it. In this position, she towered over him. She had to place her hands on his shoulders for balance. “Well, I don’t think my feet will get wet.”

“Bon. Let us walk through the snow.”

Mari glanced up at the sky. The snow fell gently all around them, fat white flakes that tickled when they landed on her cheeks. Or nose. It really was beautiful. And peaceful. This must be how little kids feel when their fathers put them up on their shoulders. Except— Mari was actually sitting in the crook of his arm, sort of side saddle. With her knees pressed demurely together and both legs trapped within the circle of his arms, it was surprisingly comfortable. This wouldn’t work if I were taller. Huh. A benefit of being small. And in this position, she was looking down at him. It was an interesting change in perspective.

She sighed, letting the beauty of the night settle over her. “This is nice, Lucas. But, um… what brought this on?”

“I wished to talk to you. I didn’t want to wait until we get back to the pack house. I have been… a little withdrawn lately. I wish to apologize.”

“Oh.” She gazed down at his upturned face, his brown eyes solemn. “Yes. I wanted to ask you about that.” She swallowed. “I was starting to think maybe you were having second thoughts.”

“No Mari, it was never that. It was just that when the moon was growing, especially this last time— since that kiss in the car actually…” He turned his head to gaze out at the snow-covered meadow before turning back. “I couldn’t be around you. The temptation was too great, and I wouldn’t risk it. I am sorry if my actions caused you pain.”

Mari’s mouth tightened. “I just… What was it that you didn’t want to risk?” She was glad she was looking down at him, because this conversation was making her feel vulnerable enough.

“You, Mari. I would not risk you.”

“Oh. Um… how exactly?”

He looked at her for a moment, searching her eyes. “The moon.”

She blinked at him.

“The bond?”

“How?”

“The bond, Mari.” He closed his eyes and shook his head. “Merde,” he said softly, under his breath. “You do not understand. When the moon is growing… and two people have been pledged for such a long time… in close proximity…” He stopped and blew out a breath.
